Why Am I Suddenly So Hungry? It Might Not Be a Lack of Willpower

You used to be able to eat a sensible dinner and feel satisfied. Now you're eyeing the biscuit tin an hour later.

You’re hungrier than you used to be. The afternoon cravings seem stronger. You’re reaching for something sweet after dinner – and the weight that once came off fairly easily now seems determined to stay put.

Sound familiar?

If you're in your 40s or 50s, your hormones could be part of the picture.

But before you decide you've suddenly lost all your willpower, let's talk about what's actually going on.

Meet leptin – one of your appetite hormones

Leptin is produced mainly by your fat cells and helps send signals to your brain about your body's energy stores.

Think of it as one of the signals involved in telling your brain “we've got enough energy – we're satisfied.”

Another hormone, ghrelin, works in the opposite direction and is involved in signalling hunger.

These aren't the only things controlling your appetite – far from it – but they are part of a much bigger system involving your hormones, brain, gut, sleep, stress and metabolism.

And menopause can change some of those signals.

So why does menopause make weight management harder?

As oestrogen levels change during perimenopause and menopause, there can be changes in appetite regulation, insulin sensitivity and where your body tends to store fat.

Research into leptin specifically is complicated. Some studies find changes in leptin levels during menopause, while others find that differences are largely explained by changes in body fat. There is also evidence that the body may become less responsive to leptin's signals in some circumstances.

In other words, it's not as simple as “menopause switches off your leptin.”

But many women do notice that their appetite, cravings and relationship with food change during midlife.

And there are other factors that can pile on top.

Poor sleep can make hunger harder to manage.Stress can increase cravings.Losing muscle as we age reduces how much energy we use at rest. And if you're eating less because you're trying to lose weight, your body can respond by making food seem even more appealing.

Suddenly, the approach that worked in your 30s – “I'll just eat less and do more” – doesn't feel quite so straightforward.

So what can you actually do?

The answer isn't to fight your hunger.

It's to make your food and training work with your physiology rather than constantly battling it.

Start with the basics:

  • Prioritise protein. It helps support muscle and can make meals more satisfying.

  • Eat plenty of fibre. Vegetables, fruit, wholegrains, beans and pulses can help keep meals filling.

  • Strength train. Maintaining muscle becomes increasingly important as we get older. It supports strength, function and metabolic health.

  • Don't rely on cardio to compensate for food. Running or sweating more isn't a punishment for eating.

  • Look at your sleep. If you're exhausted because you're waking several times a night, feeling hungrier the next day isn't a failure of discipline.

  • And perhaps most importantly:

  • Stop trying to solve every midlife change with a stricter diet.

You don't need more willpower. You need a better strategy.

This is exactly why I don't believe in putting women over 40 on another restrictive diet and telling them to “be good”.

The goal is to build habits that you can actually maintain – while getting stronger, supporting your health and learning how to manage the changes that come with midlife.

That's what we work on in my Midlife Fit Programme.

It's designed for women 40+ who want to feel stronger, fitter and more confident in their bodies without living on a diet or spending their lives trying to undo what they ate yesterday.

Because midlife isn't the time to start fighting your body.

It's time to understand it – and train, eat and recover in a way that works for the woman you are now.
